About Sringeri

Sringeri is a beautiful hill town and a popular Hindu Pilgrimage center located on the shores of Tunga River at the foothill of Sahya Mountain. Sringeri is also a Taluka headquarters of Chikkamagalur District of Karnataka State. Sringeri, also spelled as Shringeri, has its history dating back to the time of Adi Shankaracharya.

About Sringeri

History of Sringeri

Sringeri has become synonymous with Adi Guru Shankaracharya. There are many legends associated with this place. According to a legend, while walking along the banks of River Tunga, Shankaracharya saw a hooded cobra that was protecting a pregnant frog. He was so overwhelmed with the benevolence of these creatures that he decided to stay here. During his stay at Sringeri for about 12 years, Adi Shankaracharya had established Sringeri Mutt, which made this place famous in the entire world. Every year thousands of devotees come here on different occasions.

Sringeri has got its name from the name of the hill, Rishyashringa Giri that is located very near to this place. Sage Vibhandaka and his son Rishyashringa used to stay here.

Geography of Sringeri

Sringeri is located about 107 KM away from Mangalore and about 336 KM away from Bangalore, the state capital. This picturesque hill station and pilgrimage place of Karnataka is located at 13.42 Degrees North Latitude and 75.25 Degrees East Longitude. The elevation of this place is at 672 m above the mean sea level.

Demographics of Sringeri

According to the India Census of 2001, the total population of Sringeri is 4, 253. The percentage of males 52% and percentage of females is 48%. The average literacy rate of Sringeri is 83%. Most of the people speak Kannada but Tulu is also spoken here by a section of people.

Sringeri houses many temples and muttas and out of them the most important one is the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, one of the 4 muttas in India established by Adi Shankaracharya. The rest 3 muttas are established in Puri, Badrinath and Dwarka. Adi Shankaracharya is the pioneer of Hindu Philosophy of Advaita Vedanta.

Sringeri Sharada Peetham

Sringeri Sharada Peetham was established in 8th CE. The mutta established by Adi Shankaracharya is also called Dakshinamnaya Sringeri Sharada Peetham. The head of this mutta is called Jagadguru. In Sanskrit Language the meaning of Jagadguru is the teacher of entire world. The head also gets the title of Shankaracharya. This mutta maintains many other temples and Vedic schools. Another popular temple of Sringeri, Sharada Temple, is also maintained by Sringeri Mutta.

Many important Hindu festivals are celebrated by this mutta. One of them is the Navaratri. Special offerings and pujas are organized for Devi Sharadamba for 9 days during Navaratri.

Sharadamba Temple

The main deity of this temple is Sharadamaba who is the Goddess of wisdom and learning. This shrine was a small one during the time of Adi Shankaracharya but right now this has become one of the most famous temples of south India. During 14th AD, the old sandalwood idol of Sharadamba got replaced with the idol made with stone and gold.

Vidyashankara Temple

This temple was built during 14th CE and was constructed by Vidyaranya, the sage who patronized the founders of the Vijayanagara Empire, Bukka and Harihara. The main temple structure has 12 pillars which symbolized the 12 zodiac signs. The doors and windows of this temple were made in such a manner that during equinoxes, the sunrise is visible from the place where deity is placed. The temple architecture is the combination of the Dravidian and Hoyasala styles. The Garbhagriha of this temple is on the western side of the temple and it has got the idols of Devi Durga and Vidya Ganapati at the entrance. There are idols of Lord Maheswara, Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma on other three sides of the Garbhagriha. In the month of Kartika, on the occasion of Shukla Paksha, Vidyatirtha Rathotsava is celebrated at this temple premise.

Sri Paraswanath Tirthankara Temple

This is one of the most sacred places for the Jains. This Jain temple is dedicated to Parswanath, the 23rd Jain Tirthankara. The temple architecture is the combination of Jain and south Indian style.

Other temples of Sringeri are Durgamba Temple in the south of the town, Kere Anjaneya Temple in the west of the town, Kala Bhairava Temple in the east of the town, and Kalikamba Temple in the north of the town. The temple of Sri Malahanikareshwara Temple is located in the center of the town.
Sringeri has a beautiful waterfall, Sirimane Falls, located at a distance of 20 KM away from the town.

How to Reach Sringeri

Sringeri can be reached by air, rail and road. Sringeri can be reached from Horanadu side. The places in between Sringeri and Horanadu are S.K Border, Kalasa and Kudermukh National Park. Regular buses ply to Sringeri from places like Mangalore, Bangalore, Chikkamagalur, Horanadu, Shimoga, Hassan, Birur and many other places of Karnataka. The nearest airport to Sringeri is Bajpe Airport or Mangalore Airport. The nearest railway stations to Sringeri are Birur, Kadur and Shimoga. Sringeri can also be reached from Udupi. After getting down at Udupi Railway Station, which is about 55 KM away from Sringeri, travelers can come to Sringeri by bus or private taxis.
 
The best time to visit Sringeri is from October to April.
